It was a mixed bag of results in September with a couple of home draws against tough opposition, two big away wins and a day to forget in Stourport.
The Peacocks began September at Garden Walk with a hard fought draw against Pelsall Villa Colts in front of the biggest crowd of the season so far. Nathan Jones put Gornal ahead before two quick fire goals in response looked to hand the visitors all three points until Jones’ second late on gave Gornal the least they deserved from the game.
The first of back to back away games saw the Peacocks travel to the Rec to face FC Darlaston. The weather was hot which perhaps contributed to the heated nature of the game with both sides seeing red, Chad Carter sent off for Gornal whilst the hosts saw three players given their marching orders. Away from the carnage Gornal were clinical and ran out 4-1 winners thanks to goals from T.J Davies, Luke Carter and a brace from Nathan Guest.
Stourport Swifts Development were next up for the Peacocks and it would be a performance in complete contrast to the week previous. Despite starting the game well and taking the lead through Sam Bratt-Wyton’s long range effort a litany of errors and defensive frailties allowed the hosts to take all three points as Gornal fell to a 4-1 defeat.
The lads returned to Garden Walk hoping to bounce back from their first defeat of the season but when the visitors are Saltley Stallions it was always going to be tough. The sides played out a largely uneventful goalless draw, earning Gornal their first clean sheet of the campaign.
A local derby at Wrens Nest was the fixture to close out the month and it would see Gornal’s best performance of the season so far as they put six past the hosts. Despite going a goal down early on the lads managed to go in level at the break courtesy of a Luke Sidaway goal and a penalty save from Peter Hawk. Five second half goals without response sealed an emphatic away win with Jay Rossiter, Luke Carter and Sam Bratt-Wyton finding the net.
September ends with Gornal sitting fourth in the standings on 16 points and still very much in the promotion mix. October has some tough league fixtures against Wellington Amateurs (H), Tipton Town (A) and Warstones Wanderers (H) as well as two home cup ties.
