Jamie Oliver’s Thoughts: Wednesfield 0-3 Gornal Athletic

After last week’s 1-0 away win it was a must that we built on that against Wednesfield yesterday.

Different games always need different approaches and yesterday it was about us pressing from the front with high energy levels to pin Wednesfield back from the start and win the ball back high up the pitch.

Our two first half goals came from the high pressing and forcing the mistakes but at times we have failed to capitalise on it in previous games so was nice to get rewarded for the work rate the lads showed.

First goal was Piggo pressing the keeper and the ball landing to Brad Welding and with a first time effort on goal found the bottom corner of the open goal, but that does this goal no justice so go on the socials and see for yourself you won’t be disappointed.

Second goal and Piggo pressing the keeper and this time he got there first and the keeper brought him down in the box and a penalty was awarded, once again Brad Welding converted for the spot go his second of the game.

Second half we didn’t really seem to come out the dressing room and credit to Wednesfield they sensed this and applied some early pressure, a great save from Louis Connor was key as we had said the next goal was crucial and if they get it we could be holding on.

Luckily for us the third goal came in our favour as Ewan Edwards sized up the defender down the wing using his pace to the square it into the box to find Brad Welding all alone to calmly slot home his hat trick.

Fantastic to get two wins on the bounce with two clean sheets to take into the final game of the season at home to AFC Bridgnorth next Saturday as we make sure we finish the season off as well as we can and not let it fizzle out.

When taking the reins until the end of the season I’ve enjoyed the challenges it has brought, losing players, bringing in players and trying to implement a playing style and a pathway with the u18’s so next week we must finish on a high and see what happens in the closed season, but I’m proud of all the lads buying into what we wanted and how they have helped the younger players as they start their journey in football so I thank you all and I thank the fans for all their support.
