Battling Gornal Defeat Tipton With Solo Goal
By Ashley Davies
Gornal finished the game with ten men and fought across the line on remembrance weekend against Tipton Town
Pre game Ash Causer and Rich Langford presented a reef to Andy our war veteran who had spoken to the lads pre match about the importance of this weekend.
Gornal started well against a Tipton side keen to leapfrog them in the table with Andy Burgess having an early strike from the edge of the area held by Chris Thomas before a poor keeper clearance fell to TJ Munthali 20 yards out his effort was bent just over and wide of the post.
The next few minutes were a real battle with Antony Cox back in the squad following injury firing over the bar, Tipton were gaining a foothold in the possession stakes.
Just after the half hour Joe Collingridge made his first meaningful save as a strike from long range was pushed out by the teenager.
He was nearly called into action again as a Tipton free kick fell into the six years box and onto the foot of Mark Cartwright, the defender could only touch it wide though from a wonderful position.
Matt Martin then gave Gornal Athletic the lead, a great run from the midfielder broke two challenges he got 20 yards out and stuck it. A deflection straight after he shot sent it right into the corner and over Thomas to give Gornal the lead.
Scott Broadway then had a shot wide of the post for Tipton as the away side really tried to make their possession worthwhile.
Last action before the break saw Antony Cox have a shot from the penalty spot beat Thomas but the man on the line denied the wide man a return goal.
Straight after the break Gornal look to be in self destruct mode. Poor passing allowed TJ Davies in, Joe Collingridge brought the forward down and the penalty was awarded a minute into the half.
Super Joe to the rescue though as Davies penalty went to the left, so did Joe who pushed it out, got up and blocked the rebound which he then jumped on. Superb from the number 1.
Joe then held a shot from the edge from Sam Hesson.
Tipton were raining in the pressure as another cross came in it was knocked onto the Gornal crossbar and then a shot from the edge was deflected but Joe Collingridge reacted brilliantly to get across his line and push out the effort that was bottom corner bound.
Matt Martin then had a free kick from 25 yards bend just over the bar.
Gornal had worked hard to deny TJ Davies opportunities throughout the day but when he got a shot off with twenty to go Collingridge was equal to it.
With seventeen (plus added) left the officials made a huge call, having watched Nathan Griffiths taken out late they played on, up the other end Richard Langford challenged and Davies went down, the officials gave Langford a second yellow card for the foul and saw Gornal Athletic down to ten men.
Off that free kick the ball was in the net, an own goal it would've been but referee Simon Cartwright saw a push on the Gornal man.
Scott Broadway then drove an effort wide of the target as Gornal were standing tall against huge pressure.
Ex Gornal forward Ben Store then had a header held by Collingridge who was taking pressure off his team mates all the time.
Right at the death 90+8 Tipton looked in with TJ Davies using his pace against the Gornal defence but Joe Collingridge beat him to the ball with Reece Harper shielding Davies. Collingridge cleared and the full time whistle went.
Every Gornal player celebrated with their hard work getting them across the line.
