Showell and Piggott Goals Gain Gornal Great Point
By Ashley Davies
Kane Showell and Ryan Piggott scored as Gornal came from behind late on against league leaders Worcester Raiders to grab a point.
With a few away and out a couple of new faces joined the Gornal ranks for the game against table topping Worcester Raiders. Kyle Peters and Kane Showell were looking forward to debuts in the yellow and green.
The game started pretty evenly but Worcester had the early advantage with no one closing down Stoddard for the cross the full back whipped a ball onto the head of Kyle Belolmonte who headed across Joe Collingridge and into the far corner.
Matt Martin was inches from a Ryan Piggott cross before the midfielder had a shot from range deflected into the hands of Lewis Pinches.
Joe Collingridge then saved Gornal with a leg out to stop Luke Molloy. One one one he should've done better but Joe stayed big and didn't make it easy.
Jay Rossister then cleared one off the line from under his crossbar to deny a certain Worcester Raiders goal.
Piggott would have the last action of the half. He beat three and had a shot blocked by the body of Lewis Pinches. Wonderful skill shown by the forward who was looking for an opportunity all game.
Kyle Peters came on at half time for Jay Rossister who was carrying a knock.
Second half started as badly as the first as Worcester doubled their lead within five minutes. Joe Collingridge came out his area to clear a ball but didn't and Matthew Andrews was on hand to finish into the unguarded net from 30 yards.
Ryan Piggott was then just inches from a Nathan Griffiths pass Worcester defended the final third well all afternoon, they certainly knew how to work hard and do the dirty side of the game but also could clearly knock it about given the opportunity.
Joe Drake Cervantes then blocked a shot on the line before Kane Showell replaced Nathan Griffiths for another debut.
Tyler Charris then replaced Chris Hill who went down with a suspected broken nose.
Joe Collingridge came good again with a big save as Worcester Raiders ran through he stayed big and stopped the shot with his face.
Then the moment of hope: Matt Martin found space in the edge, his shot was blocked, the loose ball connected with Kane Showell and looped up high, over Pinches, nestling in the back of the net. Gornal ran to get the ball with some fire in the bellies.
It took just three minutes as Kyle Peters best his man, cut inside and slotted the ball between the central defenders for Ryan Piggotts run, he rounded the keeper and finished calmly to pull it back!
Gornal then knew they'd have to stand strong as they looked to be the only club this year to take four points off Worcester Raiders.
A late Raiders effort was saved low by Collingridge before he managed to kick away the loose the ball denying the rebound to the striker.
A superb point,
We'll see you all Tuesday against Telford at Garden Walk.
