Wellington Amateurs defeat Gornal Athletic 5-3 in Shropshire
November started with huge promise for Gornal Athletic but ended in a whimper as a still depleted side were downed 5-3 at Wickes Stadium.
Gornal were still struggling to name recognised defenders but were delighted to see Chris Hill back from a broken nose to captain the side with Richard Langford suspended.
Ash Causer named some new faces with Ozzy Agibe and Joe Cotterill in the squad along with himself. The 15 man squad were still carrying some knocks but also welcomed back Geoff Hill, that's four faces we haven't had available that helped get the side back together.
The game started well with Gornal taking the lead from Halwest Wahab the defender got to a loose ball in the area to fire home.
Gornal doubled the lead when debutant Ozzy Agibe cross was handled by the defender. Geoff Hill smashed home the penalty.
Andy Burgess was then forced off with illness, the striker really struggling and looking extremely pale as he was replaced with Nathan Griffiths, who was still carrying a knock from the last couple of weeks.
The game was rather scrappy and saw Gornal never really settle, Martin Rudd scored a quick fire double to send the home side in level at the break. The first was a through ball he slotted past Joe Collingridge. The second he got on the end of a lobbed past and unleashed a strong effort into the near corner.
After the break the ever tricky Challoner put the home side ahead after he got the wrong side of Imar Shimmer.
The fourth quickly followed, a Ross Bentley free kick from 20 yards into the bottom corner. That killed a Gornal side off that were struggling with ball retention throughout the match.
A fifth did come from Challoner, the winger beat three on the byline and finished at the near post past Collingridge.
Late on Ryan Steadman corner was met by Geoff Hill who hit the crossbar with a header.
Hill would then score his second when he rounded the keeper and put it in the far corner.
That was that for Gornal though who will be keen to get some injuries cleared up for next week at home to Old Wulfrunians.
